 With its spectacular volcanic landscape and soft-focus sunsets, Milos is like Santorini in the ‘60s – undiscovered, otherworldly, and blissfully peaceful.  The birthplace of Venus di Milo is also hopelessly romantic, its coastline scalloped with castaway coves, hot springs, and syrmata – miniature boathouses painted in a riot of colours.

The fishing villages of Mandrakia, Klima and Fyropotamos are postcard-perfect, yet Milos has never been dependent on tourism.  Rich in minerals, the island was one of the earliest civilisations in the Cyclades thanks to its deposits of obsidian, sulphur, and manganese.  This geology has created a landscape of extraordinary beauty: cliffs streaked with green, ochre, and magenta, lunar rock formations, caves and catacombs sculpted from the craggy coastline.

Nobody knows how many beaches there are on Milos.  Locals claim there are at least 75, ranging from brilliant white to striking black, red and grey sand.  All have luminous water in dazzling hues of emerald, cobalt and aquamarine.  The hidden fjords, coves and sea caves make a stunning setting for kayaking, snorkelling, scuba diving, and sailing – as well as a refuge for endangered monk seals.

There’s a wealth of culture too: an ancient theatre for starlit concerts, a crumbling castle, folk art and archaeological museums (The statue of Venus is a copy – the original, unearthed by a farmer in 1820, is now in the Louvre).
